This page is intended to give you some general rules on driving related issues in Cebu. These are just my personal observations, put in hopefully a humorous way - and are not actual “rules” that they have in the Philippines. I just thought it would be more entertaining to put these thoughts into rules that people seem to follow.

General Rules For driving a car in the Philippines

  • Pass at your own risk, as often and wherever possible.
  • The car driving fastest has the right of way, unless you honk your horn first.
  • Turn left in front of traffic whenever possible.
  • Flash your lights to let someone know you have the right of way.
  • There is no “wrong” side of the road, just a preferred side to drive on.
  • Every street is a one-way street unless traffic is driving in the opposite direction.
  • Always honk when passing on the left.
  • Always honk when passing on the right.
  • Drive as close as possible to a stray dog sleeping by the side of the road.
  • If it is raining, headlights are optional.
  • Replace your windshield wipers at least once while you own the vehicle.
  • A no parking zone is a parking zone as long as you can see the vehicle.

General Rules For being a foreign passenger in the Philippines

  • Avoid looking out the front of the vehicle unless you like to be frightened.
  • Plan for at least an hour no matter where you drive – even short distances.

  • Avoid rolling down the window for beggars.
  • Avoid the word Magano in front of anyone selling anything.
  • Don’t buy water or food at stop lights or when traffic is stopped.
  • Plan to go to the mall a lot.  :)
