3:45 PM, June 24, 2003 (22.5 hours travel time)
Here I am, back in the domestic terminal at LAX. I haven’t slept in more than 28 hours. I was hungry. Ah… a Burger King BK Veggie burger. It was nice to be back in the US. I sat near my gate, munching on my veggie burger, feeling relatively surprised that I felt as good as I did after that long flight and after not having sleep. I felt a bit sore, but I didn’t feel like I was going to fall over.
I dug out the portable DVD player that I had been lugging around but didn’t have the ability to watch on the Cathay Pacific flight, and a young man, I would guess about 25, sitting near me asked what it was. A nice young man, short blonde hair. I showed him the DVD player, and we struck up a conversation. He was telling me about the fact he moved to LA to become an actor – he was currently waiting tables. His live-in girlfriend also is an actress. Not a lot of luck for either of them. I congratulated him on his guts to move there and try to do what he wanted to do. I admired his adventurous spirit. He was traveling back to Austin where he grew up to see family. Someone getting married… I forget whom. I was dying to tell someone about my trip to Cebu and about Nińa, so he got an earful of that. He seemed like a really nice guy and I was happy to be surrounded by conversations that I could understand. His flight got moved to another gate so I wished him well – and he was off.
4:50 rolled around and they were seating for my flight. It didn’t look like it was going to be a very full flight, so I had hoped that I could watch a DVD with an empty seat next to me and relax. The three hour flight home seemed like nothing now – time had gone so slowly from Hong Kong to LAX, how bad could this flight be?
